RESEARCH GROUP

The MUSK Health research group at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University - was founded in 2015, and conducts research related to musculoskeletal conditions.

Research in musculoskeletal conditions is crucial as these conditions are responsible for most of the chronic disability in the world. Globally, the number of people suffering from musculoskeletal conditions has increased by 25 percent over the past decade, and is projected to increase even further in coming decades, particularly in low-income and midlle-income countries.

Our definition of musculoskeletal conditions is in line with the concepts used in the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health of the Bone and Joint Decade (see http://bjdonline.org), which operates with 5 primary musculoskeletal conditions:

  •  Osteoarthritis

  •  Inflammatory arthritis (principally, rheumatoid arthritis)

  •  Back pain

  •  Musculoskeletal injuries (such as occupational and sports injuries and road traffic accidents)

  •  Crystal arthritis (such as gout)

  •  Osteoporosis and fragility fractures

The current research projects in the MUSK Health research group mainly focuses on osteoarthritis, back pain, and shoulder pain, but also chronic musculoskeletal disorders in general. The research covers both a clinical and societal perspective on these issues. The research group has an extended collaboration with many leading research groups within musculoskeletal health. Findings are published in social science and clinical journals, click here to read more about our publications.
