Although motivational interviewing (MI) has been recommended in vocational rehabilitation there is limited knowledge about MI for people with musculoskeletal disorders. The objective of this mapping review was to investigate research on MI as a method to facilitate return to work for individuals who are on sick leave due to musculoskeletal disorders. The review revealed a huge gap in research on this topic. Despite comprehensive searchers for all types of empirical studies, we only identified two randomised controlled trials of variable methodological quality with conflicting results. Hence, more studies should be conducted before MI is implemented as a method to increase return to work for people with musculoskeletal disorders.
